Course Overview

This course focuses on establishing accurate project context in the IES Virtual Environment by setting the correct location and selecting appropriate weather data for different simulation objectives. You’ll learn how these early decisions influence results and provide a reliable foundation for performance‑led analysis.

Next, you explore how profiles are used to represent realistic building operation. You’ll examine different profile types and learn how to create, import, edit, and apply them within the VE, building daily schedules into weekly and annual profiles. Practical examples demonstrate how profiles are used to control occupancy, equipment, ventilation, HVAC operation, and overall building behaviour.

Additional lessons covering different building types, including a worked Multi‑Unit Residential Building example, help you develop consistent, context‑driven simulations. Establish a solid foundation for modelling comfort, loads, energy and HVAC performance with consistency and confidence as you integrate climate data and detailed profiles into your simulations.

What You'll Learn

This course is certified for 1 CPD hour. It covers the following key concepts, tools and workflows.

  • How to set project locations and select appropriate weather files within IESVE.

  • How to create, structure and import daily, weekly and annual profiles.

  • How to apply profiles across systems, zones and whole building models for realistic operation.

  • How profiles influence comfort analysis, HVAC scheduling, lighting and energy performance.

  • How profiles support realistic simulation workflows, including MURB modelling.
